Wardrobe Alert! First Look at the Best of Fashion Week

Wardrobe

As the fashion tribe returns home to recover from the relentless pace of the past few weeks, it’s time for a round-up of the best of the spring/summer 2017 shows.

The spring/summer ready-to-wear shows, like the resort shows, are always a bit more challenging in terms of what we’re looking for here at Dandelion Chandelier. We like clothes for women of power and influence, and sometimes the warm weather leads designers into the land of girly, fun, and frilly. There’s nothing wrong with any of that, but we need something to wear to work. And to board meetings, black-tie fund-raisers, graduations, and dinner with friends. And on date night with our spouses!

With that lens, here’s what we saw that we loved (our Pinterest board has all of these looks):

Suits with attitude: Thom Browne, we are totally in love with what you did this season – gorgeous, fun, unexpected, and powerful suits and dresses that make us feel simultaneously businesslike and carefree. Ditto Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, who as always has us covered beautifully. Louis Vuitton gave us sliced-up asymmetrical suits to keep people on their toes, and Dries van Noten supplied a great power jacket. Girl bosses, these are for you.

Polished day dresses and skirts: Michael Kors showed a couple of great wear-to-work outfits that would keep us looking fresh on even the hottest summer days. So did Derek Lam, upon whom we can always rely for that. Tomas Maier did a nice job on this front for both Bottega Veneta and for his eponymous line. Prada, Burberry, Dries and Altuzarra all had looks that we would happily wear to the office (and out to lunch).

Little White Dresses: A summer staple, there was a plethora of options for smart LWDs. We noted Chanel, LV, Brandon Maxwell and Tomas Maier as standouts.

Pink and Red! Two of our favorite colors were well-represented this season. Valentino (of course), but also McQueen, Bottega, Altuzarra and Proenza Schouler all had gorgeous choices, ranging from blush to Bordeaux.

Dark Romance: We still love dark florals, even though the idea is no longer new. Gucci, Rodarte, Erdem, Valentino, Rag & Bone, and McQueen all took the concept and made it their own again this season.

Gala gowns: When the dress code requires a gown, we’ll happily wear looks from Carolina Herrera, Monse, Brandon Maxwell, Altuzarra, Erdem, McQueen and Valentino.

Long Weekends: Just looking at some of the offerings from Stella McCartney, Tomas Maier and Tory Burch made us long for the long weekends of summer. We want a glass of rose now!

Date Night: For the all-important date nights, whether we’re doing a raucous double-date or a quiet table for two, we’ll be turning to Christopher Kane, Burberry, Saint Laurent, Dior, McQueen, Givenchy, and Proenza. We’ll be wearing cute shoes, too. More on that later.

Outerwear: Surprisingly, some of the best coats are shown during the spring/summer season. We loved Proenza, Burberry and Dries to keep the chill away.

There were plenty of trends on the runway that we spotted that we are just letting go right by us, but you might love them: sheer, one-sleeved, mini-skirts, cut-outs, and crop tops were everywhere. Gucci was an explosion of embellishment, and Miuccia Prada was up to her old ugly-beautiful tricks, which kind of don’t work for us here IRL.

That’s the joy of fashion, right now in particular. Every single thing you could want is out there somewhere. You just have to find it. Enjoy the treasure hunt!
